Def Leppard

UK iconic rock band Def Leppard

Def Leppard are an iconic English rock band, originating from Sheffield in 1977. The band’s classic line-up, which has been stable since 1992, consists of Joe Elliott (lead vocals), Rick Savage (bass, backing vocals), Rick Allen (drums), Phil Collen (guitar, backing vocals), and Vivian Campbell (guitar, backing vocals). They emerged as a prominent force in the new wave of British heavy metal scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before evolving into a more polished, melodic hard rock sound that defined much of the 1980s.

Their journey began with humble origins, with Joe Elliott initially meeting guitarist Pete Willis and bassist Rick Savage, who were part of a band called Atomic Mass. Elliott, having come up with the name “Deaf Leopard” (later deliberately misspelled to avoid punk associations), joined them, and by November 1977, the first iteration of Def Leppard was formed. Early rehearsals reportedly took place in a Sheffield spoon factory, a far cry from the stadium stages they would later command.

The band gained considerable traction with their self-titled EP in 1979, followed by their debut album, On Through the Night, in 1980. However, it was their collaboration with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange on their second album, High ‘n’ Dry (1981), that truly began to shape their distinctive sound. The album’s track “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak” became one of the first heavy metal videos to receive significant airplay on the then-nascent MTV, introducing them to a much wider American audience.

Their breakthrough came with Pyromania in 1983, an album that sold millions and cemented their status. However, tragedy struck on New Year’s Eve 1984 when drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident. Demonstrating incredible resilience, Allen adapted to a specially designed electronic drum kit and continued to play with the band, a truly inspiring testament to his dedication. Their perseverance was rewarded with the monumental success of Hysteria in 1987, an album that spawned multiple hit singles, including “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Love Bites,” and became one of the best-selling albums of all time.

More tragedy followed in 1991 with the death of guitarist Steve Clark due to substance abuse. Vivian Campbell joined the band in 1992, and they released Adrenalize, which also topped charts. Def Leppard’s ability to blend hard rock riffs with pop sensibilities and arena-ready choruses has made them one of the world’s best-selling music artists, with over 100 million records sold. They are one of only five rock bands to have two studio albums, Pyromania and Hysteria, certified Diamond in the US, signifying sales of over 10 million copies each. Their enduring appeal was further recognised with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
