Few music festivals can claim a backdrop quite like the Mundi Mundi Bash. Set against the vast red-dirt landscapes of the Australian Outback, just outside Broken Hill in New South Wales, the festival has built its reputation on bringing people together for live music, camping, road trips and a uniquely Australian sense of adventure. Now, the first details for the 2027 edition have arrived, with a line-up packed with homegrown favourites and familiar names spanning generations of Australian music.
Taking place from 19th to 21st August 2027, Mundi Mundi Bash will return to the Mundi Mundi Plains with a programme led by JIMMY BARNES, THE LIVING END and THE CAT EMPIRE. The announcement brings together rock royalty, alternative favourites, pop icons and high-energy live performers, promising three days of music in one of the country’s most distinctive festival settings.
JIMMY BARNES LEADS A CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIAN ROCK
Few artists are more closely associated with Australian rock than JIMMY BARNES. From his years with Cold Chisel to a hugely successful solo career, Barnes has become one of the country’s defining rock voices, known for his powerhouse performances and an extensive catalogue of songs that have become part of Australia’s musical identity. His appearance is a natural fit for a festival built around big singalongs, shared memories and the unmistakable atmosphere of an open-air crowd.
Joining him are THE LIVING END, whose blend of punk energy, rockabilly influences and straight-ahead rock has kept audiences moving for decades. Their live shows are renowned for their pace and intensity, making them a strong addition to a festival where the crowd is as much a part of the experience as the performers on stage.
THE CAT EMPIRE bring a different kind of energy, mixing ska, jazz, funk and Latin influences into a sound designed to get people dancing. Their infectious rhythms and celebratory performances should provide a perfect contrast to the harder-edged rock elsewhere on the bill.
A LINE-UP PACKED WITH AUSTRALIAN FAVOURITES
The 2027 announcement reaches well beyond its leading names. KATE CEBERANO, ROSS WILSON, THE SCREAMING JETS, MENTAL AS ANYTHING, MARK SEYMOUR and PSEUDO ECHO add decades of musical history to the programme, while DRAGON, 1927, V SPY V SPY and GANGGAJANG bring more familiar songs and classic Australian rock and pop to the plains.
One of the most intriguing inclusions is THE ROLLING STONES REVUE, FEATURING ADALITA, PHIL JAMIESON, TEX PERKINS AND TIM ROGERS. Bringing together some of Australia’s most distinctive voices, the project promises a fresh take on the music of one of rock’s most enduring bands.
Country-rock fans can look forward to CASEY BARNES, while Furnace and the FUNDAMENTALS are well placed to deliver the kind of high-energy, crowd-pleasing performance that can turn a festival audience into one enormous singalong. Elsewhere, 19-TWENTY bring their blues, roots and rock intensity, PIERCE BROTHERS offer their folk and roots-driven sound, and SARAH MCLEOD adds the alternative-rock pedigree she established as frontwoman of The Superjesus.
The line-up also features THE CHANTOOZIES, ELLA HOOPER, TAXIRIDE FEATURING JASON SINGH AND THE PIGS. From chart favourites and pub-rock staples to blues-infused performances and exuberant party music, the breadth of the announcement reflects the festival’s appeal across different ages and musical tastes.
MORE THAN A MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Mundi Mundi Bash has become known for offering something beyond a conventional weekend of live music. The setting is central to its identity: a huge expanse of red earth beneath an open sky, with the surrounding Outback landscape creating a striking contrast to the crowds, camping areas and festival stage.
Camping is part of the experience, with the temporary festival town of Mundiville bringing attendees together for several days. Fancy dress, meeting fellow festival-goers and travelling to the event with friends are all part of the atmosphere. The festival also welcomes families and has a dog-friendly camping area, helping it appeal to a broad mix of people.
Its community focus extends to fundraising for charitable causes, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Beyond Blue. That combination of music, shared experiences and giving back has helped make the Bash a destination event for people travelling from across Australia.
For many attendees, the journey is part of the adventure. The Mundi Mundi Plains sit around 38 kilometres from Broken Hill by sealed road, with the wider region offering a very different setting from Australia’s major city festivals. It is a place where the landscape, the camping and the people contribute as much to the memories as the performances themselves
