It’s announcement season! Way Out West Festival organisers have added four new acts to the bill: electronica pioneer MOBY [US] will play his first show in Sweden in over a decade, the British musical genius FOUR TET [UK] makes his Way Out West debut, alternative pop break out star OKLOU [FR] returns to the city, and Gothenburg’s very own ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF gives a long-awaited hometown performance supported by her newly acclaimed album ‘ICONOCLASTS’.
Long before superstar DJs became a fixture of global pop culture, MOBY was redefining what an electronic artist could be. Emerging from the 1990s underground with a fearless disregard for genre boundaries, he treated dance music not as a closed circuit but as an open field. One where punk energy, ambient minimalism, rave euphoria and gospel-infused soul could coexist. Few artists have shaped modern electronica as profoundly. And nowhere did that impact resonate more powerfully than on his landmark album “Play” (1999) – a record that rewired the sound of a generation, brought club music to the masses, and became a blueprint for countless producers around the world.
But MOBY’s influence extends far beyond music. A vocal advocate for animal rights, veganism, mental-health awareness and political activism, he has long used his platform to argue for a more compassionate world. That sense of responsibility and purpose runs through a discography spanning 22 studio albums, the latest being the acclaimed “Always Centered At Night” (2024), where Moby continues to expand the boundaries of electronica through a hybrid of jazz, R&B and rock. This summer at Way Out West, one of electronic music’s great architects will remind us why his vision remains as vital and curious as ever – his first show in Sweden since 2009!
In recent years, FOUR TET has gone from underground visionary to festival headliner, collaborating with global names like Fred again.. and Skrillex. Yet despite his newfound visibility, he’s never lost his ear for detail. On record, the crate-digging curiosity and sense of texture that has defined his music for over two decades remains intact. FOUR TET, or Kieran Hebden as he’s also called, has always had one foot planted in club culture, switching between UK-garage rhythms, breakbeat pulses and dancefloor momentum — while the other explores ambient atmospheres, harps and folk-inflected melodies. Few producers in electronic music have a sonic fingerprint as instantly recognisable as him. A dusty drum pattern, soft-glowing synths and somewhere in the mix a fragment of a human voice drift by. It’s this unmistakable blend of warmth, rhythm, and experimentation that makes FOUR TET’s long-awaited debut at Way Out West one of the most anticipated moments of the summer.
