First names announced for Sónar Festival 2024!

Sónar festival Barcelona announces the first 70 activities from its 2024 lineup, including live performances, DJ sets, audiovisual conferences, debate forums, masterclasses, and the Sónar+D exhibition hall Project Area. The 31st edition of the festival will take place on the 13th, 14th, and of 15th June, once again temporarily transforming Barcelona into the global capital for electronic music and digital culture.

This first announcement is headlined by leading names from electronic music and beyond. CHARLOTTE DE WITTE takes her mix of techno and trance to the next level with her new show ‘Overdrive’, while global disco and house icon FOLAMOUR presents his brand new AV show. They’re joined by BEN BÖHMER live, FLOATING POINTS and REINIER ZONNEVELD live.

Elsewhere, JESSIE WARE will bring her sensual fifth album of soul and disco to life while KAYTRANADA mixes hip hop, funk, and r&b, and VINCE STAPLES drags classic 90s rap into the 21st century.

As always, Sónar 2024 features plenty of artists who are focused firmly on the dancefloor. Techno legends SURGEON & SPEEDY J present their live collaboration ‘MULTIPLES’, they’re joined by two generations of house music heroes: KERRI CHANDLER and THE MARTINEZ BROTHERS.

HÉCTOR OAKS returns to the festival, this time for a wild back-to-back set with PARTIBOI69. There’s also the triple threat of ELIZA ROSE B2B DAN SHAKE B2B SALLY C, while  Detroit and Manchester meet behind the decks with STACEY HOTWAXX HALE B2B DJ PAULETTE.

They’re joined by a wide range of DJs and selectors from across dance music: KI/KI LIVE, SKIN ON SKIN, MARLON HOFFSTADT AKA DJ DADDY TRANCE, OLOF DREIJER, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U, SURUSINGHE, SLIM SOLEDAD, DJ GIGOLA and COCO EM, to name just a few!

BLACKHAINE’S confrontational performances mix drill, noise and bruising choreography. LEE GAMBLE will bring his moving new record Models to life with a show – co-produced with Unsound festival – like nothing he’s ever done before, featuring choreography by CANDELA CAPITÁN. And there’ll be high-speed hakke dancing at 180 bpm and above during GABBER ELEGANZA’S ‘The Hakke Show’.

Provocative digital artists TEAM ROLFES will perform their virtual reality opera ‘321Rule’ live, starring viral rapper LIL MARIKO in the lead role. VMO a.k.a. VIOLENT MAGIC ORCHESTRA mix black metal and gabber, and radical collective ASIANDOPEBOYS will present ‘PHYSIS’, a six-hour multi-disciplinary performance featuring a rotating case of performers, who’ll include DIS FIG, GABBER MODUS OPERANDI and ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U.

Alongside them are a series of artists who are combining club music with performance: TOMMY CASH, HORSEGIIRL, HARDEN, local collective TORO (softchaos, engalanan and wicboyx), and CLUB CRINGE (Frost Children, Mother Cell, Angel Money, DJ Wallh4x, DJ Trick, plus special guests).

Also announced today: rising Spanish star JUDELINE, who mixes pop, funk and flamenco; synth-pop tinted UK rapper CASISDEAD; and MARIE DAVIDSON, whose live sets mix electronics and sardonic spoken word.

As NATURAL WONDER BEAUTY CONCEPT, ANA ROXANNE and DJ PYTHON will perform a delicate concert of downtempo sketches, and LORAINE JAMES will bring her intimate soundscapes to Sónar for the first time. There’s also room for BIKÔKÔ’S afro-inspired take on neo-soul, Zulu rapper TOYA DELAZY’S ‘Afrorave’, and gloomy baroque compositions by Catalan vocalist ADELAIDA. She’s joined by two producers who also work heavily with their own vocals, ELA MINUS and YUNÈ PINKU. And for the most curious listeners, there are concerts by a pair of avant-garde artists: EMPTYSET and KELLY MORAN.

Renowned contemporary artist TOMÁS SARACENO, known for his large format installations and his work with solar-powered balloons and spider webs, will explore the links between art, life sciences and social sciences in an audiovisual conference.

DAVID GRUBER, founder and director of CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), will reveal how he’s translating the conversations of sperm whales using AI. And sonic artist NICOLE L’HUILLIER  and visual artist MARTA VERDE will deliver masterclasses explaining how they’re using AI in playful, innovative ways.

Also announced are a Music & AI hacklab led by technologist PETER KIRN and the AI & Blockchain Creative Summit, dedicated to exchanges on the creative use of AI and Web3 technology.
