Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is one of the largest and most famous electronic dance music (EDM) festivals in the world. It takes place annually in Miami, Florida, and attracts thousands of people from all over the globe for a weekend of performances by top DJs, stunning visual effects, and a vibrant atmosphere.
The festival is traditionally held at Bayfront Park, located in downtown Miami. Bayfront Park is a large urban park that sits along the waterfront, offering beautiful views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline. This location provides a great backdrop for the event, with several stages set up throughout the park, each showcasing different genres of EDM, from house to techno, trap, dubstep, and more.
In 2020, the festival was expected to move to a new location, Virginia Key, an island located just across the Rickenbacker Causeway from downtown Miami. However, that year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following that, Ultra returned to Bayfront Park in 2022 after two years of hiatus.
The first Ultra Music Festival took place in 1999, when it was founded by Russell Faibisch and Alex Omes. The original event was held in South Beach, Miami at the Miami Marine Stadium and was a much smaller gathering, primarily focused on electronic and dance music. It was named after the iconic 1997 album Ultra by Depeche Mode, although the festival’s name has since become synonymous with the genre.
From its humble beginnings, Ultra grew exponentially, attracting huge crowds and becoming a major international festival. By 2001, the festival had already expanded and relocated to Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami, where it continued to grow. Over the years, the event has become a key part of the Miami Music Week, which draws EDM enthusiasts, artists, and industry professionals to the city every year.
Ultra Music Festival became especially famous for its massive stage productions, featuring innovative lighting, 3D visuals, and high-energy performances from world-renowned DJs. It’s also known for its iconic closing act — often a spectacular fireworks show and the performance of top artists like David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, and Tiësto, to name just a few.
Ultra Music Festival played a major role in popularising EDM in the United States and the world. It helped bring mainstream attention to the genre during the 2010s when electronic dance music became a global phenomenon. The festival has been a launchpad for many DJs’ careers and continues to be a top destination for electronic music lovers every year.
Additionally, the festival’s global influence has expanded over the years, leading to the creation of Ultra festivals in other cities and countries, such as Ultra Europe, Ultra Korea, and Ultra Japan, cementing Ultra Music Festival as a global brand.
Overall, Ultra Music Festival remains a key cultural event in Miami, blending music, technology, and art into an unforgettable experience.

The park began construction in 1924 under the design plans of Warren Henry Manning and officially opened in March 1925. Beginning in 1980, it underwent a major redesign by Japanese-American modernist artist and landscape architect, Isamu Noguchi.
Bayfront Park holds the city’s annual “America’s Birthday Bash” on Independence Day, which attracted over 60,000 visitors in 2011. The park also hosts the city’s official New Year’s Eve party that annually hosts over 70,000 visitors.
