There are festival announcements, and then there are announcements that immediately start conversations. Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival has opened the door on its 2027 line up with three headline names that could hardly be more different, yet somehow make perfect sense together. JAMES, FATBOY SLIM and AMY MACDONALD will take centre stage when the festival returns to Belladrum Estate in the Highlands from 29th to 31st July 2027.
It is an opening statement that says quite a lot about Belladrum. Rather than building the weekend around one particular sound or generation, the festival has chosen three artists with very different musical identities, but with one important thing in common. They know how to connect with a crowd, and all three have the songs and live reputations to create those big festival moments that people remember long after the tents have been packed away.
JAMES will open the headline action, bringing one of British indie’s most enduring bands to the Highlands. Few groups have managed to maintain such a strong connection with audiences across such a long career, while songs including Sit Down have long since moved beyond the confines of the indie scene to become part of the wider British musical landscape.
For Belladrum, it is an intriguing choice to lead the weekend. JAMES are the sort of band that can turn a festival crowd into one enormous chorus, moving effortlessly between more reflective moments and the kind of full scale euphoria that works particularly well when thousands of people are gathered together in a field. Their appearance should give the opening night a distinctly British festival feel.
Then comes Friday, and the mood is likely to change considerably.
FATBOY SLIM will headline the second night, bringing one of dance music’s great showmen back to the Highlands. Norman Cook has spent decades proving that a festival crowd does not necessarily need to be divided by musical taste when the right record comes on, and his live shows have become renowned for turning huge audiences into one giant dancefloor.
There is an added sense of occasion to his Belladrum appearance. FATBOY SLIM has not performed in the Highlands for 14 years, having previously appeared at RockNess, making this something of a return to a part of the country that has already played a role in his festival history. For anyone who remembers the explosion of big beat and electronic music around the turn of the century, Friday night could be a serious trip down memory lane, although judging by Fatboy Slim’s reputation as a live performer, it is unlikely to feel particularly nostalgic once the music starts.
Then, on Saturday, Belladrum brings the weekend back to Scotland with AMY MACDONALD taking the final headline position.
It is a fitting choice for a festival with such a strong Highland identity. Macdonald has spent much of her career building a catalogue of songs that can work equally well in an intimate venue or in front of a huge outdoor audience, while her unmistakable voice has become one of the most recognisable in modern Scottish music.
Her appearance also gives the festival a different kind of headline moment. Where James bring decades of indie history and Fatboy Slim brings the energy of the dancefloor, Macdonald offers something rooted in songwriting and place. Her songs have travelled far beyond Scotland, but there remains a strong sense of home in the music, making her Saturday night appearance feel particularly appropriate for Belladrum.
Put the three names together and the most interesting thing is not how different they are. It is how naturally they represent three very different sides of the festival experience.
Thursday belongs to indie rock. Friday heads firmly towards the dancefloor. Saturday brings one of Scotland’s best known singer-songwriters to the stage. It is a combination that demonstrates the breadth Belladrum continues to offer, without making the line up feel as though it has been assembled simply by ticking boxes across different genres.
That variety has always been central to the Belladrum experience. The festival is about much more than the artists appearing on its biggest stage, with music sitting alongside arts, entertainment, family activities and the unique atmosphere created by the Belladrum Estate setting. It is a festival where wandering away from the main stage can be just as rewarding as standing in front of it, and where the unexpected discovery is often part of the attraction.
That makes these first three headliners particularly revealing. They are not simply three big names attached to three nights. They have the potential to create three completely different festival experiences, which is exactly what makes a multi day event interesting.
And there is still plenty of Belladrum 2027 to come…..
The early signs suggest that interest in next year’s festival is already considerable, with the early bird ticket allocation selling out within minutes. Now that the first headliners have been revealed, attention will inevitably turn towards the rest of the programme and the artists who will fill the stages around them.
Who else will join JAMES, FATBOY SLIM and AMY MACDONALD? Which emerging Scottish artists will get their Belladrum moment? Which smaller act will become the unexpected discovery of the weekend? And which booking will have everyone talking once the festival is underway?
Those are the questions that make the build up to a festival almost as entertaining as the event itself.
For now, though, the headline picture is beginning to take shape. James will bring the indie anthems, Fatboy Slim will turn Friday into a Highland dancefloor and Amy Macdonald will close the weekend with a distinctly Scottish flavour.
Three very different artists, three very different nights, and a rather good reason to start looking towards the Highlands.
