Laneway Festival 2027: Four Cities, One Very Big Weekend of New Music

Laneway Fest 2027 news

Laneway Festival has always had a knack for making February feel like the most exciting month of the Australian and New Zealand music calendar. For 2027, that tradition continues with a touring edition that stretches from Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne and Auckland.

The festival returns with a line-up that mixes established names, cult favourites and artists who could easily become the next big thing. At the top of the bill are FONTAINES D.C. and THE HAYLEY WILLIAMS SHOW, with the former bringing their distinctive post-punk sound and Williams taking her solo project to the Laneway stage.

But the appeal of Laneway has never been about just one or two headline names.

SLAYYYTER returns to the festival, while the bill also includes KIM PETRAS, MUNA, RICO NASTY, DIIV, JANE REMOVER, RACHEL CHINOURIRI, NINAJIRACHI, BALU BRIGADA and ADÉLA. Further down the poster there is plenty for anyone who likes discovering an artist before everyone else catches on, including AUTOMATIC, BLEECH 9:3, DAINE, DANNY L HARLE, DJ_DAVE, ECCA VANDAL, FLORENCE ROAD, GURRIERS, ROMMULAS, TIFFANY DAY and VIOLET GROHL.

And then there are the names that make you stop and look twice. Laneway has built much of its reputation around putting interesting artists together on the same bill, creating the kind of festival where arriving for one act can easily turn into discovering three more.

A FESTIVAL THAT KEEPS MOVING
The 2027 edition also marks something of a change for Laneway.

Sydney gets things underway on Friday 12th February at Gadigal Country, before the festival moves to Brisbane on Saturday 13th February. A week later it reaches Melbourne on Friday 19th February, before crossing the Tasman for its final stop at Auckland’s Tāmaki Makaurau on Sunday 21st February.

The travelling nature of Laneway is part of what makes it different from a conventional weekend festival. Rather than building one huge event in one location, the festival takes its identity on the road, adapting the experience to each city while keeping the same musical thread running through the entire tour.

There is also a notable change to the Australian route this year, with Adelaide and Perth taking a break from the main festival. Both cities will still see selected Laneway artists appearing for sideshows, keeping a connection with the festival even though they are not part of the main 2027 run.

For Laneway, it means a slightly different shape to the festival, but one that still feels true to its history.

MORE THAN A FESTIVAL LINE-UP
There is something particularly Laneway about this year’s poster. It is colourful, slightly surreal and absolutely packed with names, which feels appropriate for a festival that has spent more than two decades championing discovery.

FONTAINES D.C. bring the post-punk edge. THE HAYLEY WILLIAMS SHOW adds a major dose of alternative pop and rock. KIM PETRAS and SLAYYYTER bring the pop spectacle, while RICO NASTY and MUNA sit alongside a long list of artists crossing indie, electronic, punk, alternative and experimental territory.

It is a bill designed less around musical uniformity and more around curiosity.  That has always been one of Laneway’s strengths. You can go looking for the headliners and still come away talking about an artist you had never heard of when you walked through the gates.

The 2027 edition takes that idea across four cities and two countries, creating a festival that feels less like a single event and more like a travelling snapshot of where alternative music is heading.  From Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne to Auckland, February belongs to Laneway.

And if previous years are anything to go by, there will be plenty of discoveries waiting somewhere between the big names.
