Inkcarceration Tattoo + Music Festival has officially announced its return for July 16th – 18th 2027, bringing its uniquely dark combination of heavy music, tattoo culture and horror back to the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio.
And after selling out its 2026 edition with 90,000 attendees, the festival has already established one thing: people really like going to prison for the weekend.
THIS ISN’T YOUR AVERAGE ROCK FESTIVAL
The location alone makes Inkcarceration one of the strangest and coolest festival experiences in the US.
The Ohio State Reformatory isn’t simply a backdrop for the event. The imposing former prison becomes part of the festival itself, giving Inkcarceration an atmosphere that a conventional festival site simply can’t reproduce. Fans can explore the historic prison, take tours of the building made famous by The Shawshank Redemption, and venture into Blood Prison, the festival’s infamous haunted attraction.
Then, when you’ve had enough horror, there’s a pretty good chance a massive rock band is playing nearby.
THE 2026 EDITION SET THE BAR HIGH
Inkcarceration’s 2026 festival sold out with 90,000 fans, featuring 65 bands across three stages.
The lineup included DISTURBED, BAD OMENS, LIMP BIZKIT, PAPA ROACH, CYPRESS HILL, HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD, GOJIRA, THE USED, SLEEPING WITH SIRENS, A DAY TO REMEMBER, MOTIONLESS IN WHITE and ICE NINE KILLS.
But music is only one part of the equation.
The festival also brought together 100 tattoo artists, tattoo competitions, the haunted Blood Prison attraction and tours of the historic reformatory.
Basically, if you’ve ever thought “I wish my music festival had more tattoos and terrifying abandoned-prison energy,” this is probably your weekend.
WHERE MUSIC MEETS TATTOO CULTURE
Inkcarceration has carved out a particularly distinctive identity by putting tattoo culture on the same level as its music programming.
Professional tattoo artists descend on the reformatory for the weekend, with competitions and opportunities for fans to get work done while surrounded by thousands of fellow rock and metal fans.
It’s less “music festival with a tattoo area” and more three different subcultures colliding in one extremely unusual location.
And that’s a big part of why the festival has developed such a loyal following.
THE SETTING DOES HALF THE WORK

That uniqueness has also translated into industry recognition, with Inkcarceration recently receiving two Pollstar Global Festival of the Year nominations.
