In 2026, THE AFGHAN WHIGS – still the most soulful rock band to emerge from the 1990s – celebrate their 40th anniversary. Since their comeback in 2012 (with a phenomenal concert at Cactus festival 2014), Greg Dulli and co. have been sharper than ever!
Since then, the Whigs have dropped three albums that can easily stand alongside ultimate cult classic ‘Gentleman’ (1993) and timeless hit ‘Debonair’. On ‘Do The Beast’ (2014), ‘In Spades’ (2017) and ‘How Do You Burn?’ (2022) alike, the unique Afghan Whigs sound remains fully intact. It is a sublime combination of Sub Pop alt-rock with influences from the R&B of Motown and Stax, topped off with Greg Dulli’s imposing vocal delivery. That throat – part merciless tornado, part raw emotional assault – makes him one of the greatest rock singers in the world, who moreover seems only to get better. Music magazine SPIN therefore concluded: “The Afghan Whigs 2.0 is the rare sequel that outshines the original.”
Greg Dulli is a familiar and welcome guest in the Minnewaterpark. He has already played Cactusfestival twice – once with THE AFGHAN WHIGS and once alongside the late Mark Lanegan as The Gutter Twins (2009). In their anniversary year, for which much more news is promised, The Afghan Whigs simply cannot be missing from Cactusfestival, immediately marking their only festival show in Belgium this year!
