WU-TANG CLAN marked the first ten years of its existence as the craziest, most influential, most avant-garde, and overall best group of the last decade, wrote NME in 2005, and that description has remained the status quo to this day. At the same time, the famous Rolling Stone called them “the best rap group ever,“ NME added that they “changed hip-hop forever,“ and Billboard defined their importance with a simple phrase: “Wu-Tang is forever.“
Starting with its first album, WU-TANG CLAN has positioned itself as the benchmark for hip-hop and a blueprint for musical careers, from being paid with a counterfeit $100 bill for their first show in Texas to selling out the largest stadiums in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, and other world capitals.
They’ve released eight albums and sold over 40 million copies, creating an oeuvre that redefined hip-hop as a genre, exerting a powerful influence on legends such as Jay Z, Nas, Snoop Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G., Alicia Keys, Kanye West, as well as the new wave of stars such as Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Rick Ross, and many others.
Nearly thirty years after the group’s founding, in 2019, New York City honored the WU-TANG CLAN with a street named after them in Park Hill. Thus, their hometown of Staten Island got a “Wu-Tang Clan District,” while the band received the undying respect of the community from which it sprang. The group’s historical and musical significance was presented in the documentary series “Of Mics & Men,” as well as through the feature series “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” based on the book by the band’s founder, “The Tao of Wu.” The final season of this series will be released on 15th February.
