The Ilosaarirock Festival is an annual rock festival held on the second weekend of July in Joensuu, Eastern Finland. Founded in 1971, Ilosaarirock is the second oldest rock festival in Finland still active, and one of the oldest in Europe.
Ilosaarirock is an entity of events that in its entirety, with clubs and side-events, spans Friday to Sunday. The actual festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday. The festival site, called Laulurinne, stages performances on five separate stages with over 50 artists.
Ilosaarirock is organized mainly by volunteers and is put together by over 1,500 volunteer workers. The Ilosaarirock festival’s graphic look is chosen through an open design contest every year. The Ilosaarirock festival is organised by Joensuu Pop Musicians’ Association, which is a non-profit organisation. The profits of the festival are used to support the North Karelian music scene, bands and artists.

Joensuun Laulurinne is a magnificent park area that is particularly suitable for organising large events. One of the most significant events in Laulurinte is Ilosaarirock Festival, which has been organised in the area since 1991 and attracts more than 50,000 visitors to Laulurinne during the weekend. Another event established in the area is the opening of the Finnish summer, in which 6,000 primary school students gather to sing at Laulurinne. In addition, the region has hosted the opening concert of Nightwish’s world tour and a Farmari agricultural exhibition in 2015. Circus and fairy-up are also a familiar sight in the area during the summer.
Joensuun Laulurinne is an exceptional venue, as the area is surrounded by many events supporting services such as campsites, restaurants and parking areas. The area is also located by the lake and the journey from the centre of Joensuu is only a kilometre.
