London has seen its fair share of music festivals, but Rock N Roll Circus is arriving with a rather different idea of what a festival should look like.
The festival will make its London debut at Gunnersbury Park from 22nd – 25th July 2027, bringing its distinctive mix of live music, circus performance and big-top spectacle to West London. And for its first major statement, it has chosen a band that feels almost tailor-made for the occasion: MADNESS.
The Camden legends will headline on Saturday 24th July, bringing four decades of songs that have become woven into the fabric of British music. “Our House”, “One Step Beyond”, “Baggy Trousers” and “It Must Be Love” should sound rather good inside a giant circus tent.
They will be joined by FAT FREDDY’S DROP, BIG SPECIAL, THE WAILERS and HOLLIE COOK, with more artists still to be announced. It is an eclectic first batch, but that seems to be exactly the point. Rock N Roll Circus is less interested in fitting neatly into one musical category than creating a night that feels like an event.
The circus element is what makes it particularly intriguing. Rather than simply putting a stage in a field, the festival builds its main performances around a giant Big Top, with circus artists and theatrical entertainment woven into the experience.
It gives the whole thing a slightly old-school sense of occasion. You are not simply turning up to watch a band. You are stepping inside the show.
And MADNESS are a fitting choice to lead the London chapter. Their music has always had a theatrical quality of its own, full of characters, humour and songs designed to be shouted back by thousands of people. Put them in a circus tent in West London and the combination almost writes itself.
Rock N Roll Circus is still keeping much of its 2027 programme under wraps. But with Madness already at the centre of the poster, the London edition has made one thing clear.
This is not going to be another festival where the circus is just a name.
The circus is the point.
