So wide-ranging and rich is the identity of Primavera Sound that to celebrate it to its full magnitude, with all its nuances, we will need more than one festival in 2025 to enjoy it in its entirety. From Barcelona to Porto: two sites that have been twinned since the Portuguese city hosted the first international adventure of the festival in 2012. The baton will be handed over again next year. From the 23rd edition of Primavera Sound Barcelona to the 12th edition of Primavera Sound Porto, which will take place from the 12th to the 15th of June in the Parque da Cidade, an idyllic site that will once again become a meeting place for the Primavera community.
There awaits a multi-faceted and all-encompassing artistic line-up, made up of a total of 51 artists and recently presented with a brand-new video by Vampire Films and VETA. A musical line-up that reasserts Primavera Sound Porto’s position as a musical event with its own identity. At this point, its connection and affinity with the unmistakable created in Barcelona philosophy is as undeniable as the unique image it projects on the European festival circuit. Next year, moreover, Primavera Sound Porto will resonate beyond the three main days: a closing party will bring the festival to its culmination on Sunday 15th June with a programme that will be announced soon. But now it is the turn of the over fifty artists announced today.
An eventful festival. Despite being a crucial part of the modern history of Primavera Sound, CHARLI XCX has not yet performed at Primavera Sound Porto. The first time will be with honours: the British artist, driven by the irrepressible BRAT phenomenon that has redefined pop at a global level, will headline the next edition of the festival in what will also be her debut in Portugal. More events? Obvs. The brilliant British rapper CENTRAL CEE will confirm his status as a new generational idol, JAMIE XX will open the doors of the gigantic In Waves dance floor, DEFTONES will light their nu metal fuse, the HAIM sisters will continue to sublimate their pop made in California and BEACH HOUSE will stop time as only they know how to in the Parque da Cidade.
A festival with certainties. And, although there are still more than seven months to go before the music starts to play, the road to Primavera Sound Porto 2025 is already full of certainties. This will undoubtedly also be the festival of the relentless FONTAINES D.C., the hardcore heroes TURNSTILE, the infinite class of MICHAEL KIWANUKA, CARIBOU and his trademark house-pop, the immortal songbook of ANOHNI AND THE JOHNSONS, the signature electronica of FLOATING POINTS, the exuberant hip-hop of DENZEL CURRY, PARCELS and their talent for connecting the old and the new, the effervescent duo WET LEG, the all-terrain flow of AMINÉ and the resurrected TV ON THE RADIO. Truth be told, Primavera Sound leaves a great certainty year after year: the festival is like a window with a privileged view of the most exciting contemporary sounds.
A festival that knows where it’s going… From WAXAHATCHEE to CHAT PILE, from MAGDALENA BAY to THE DARE, from LOS CAMPESINOS! to ANGÉLICA GARCIA, who will all present some of the best records of 2024 at the festival, the line-up of Primavera Sound Porto proposes several routes towards the absolute present. A festival that is totally here and now, as exemplified by other projects that are writing their history at this very moment, such as Squid and their infallible rock machinery, the crazy FCUKERS, the newcomers BEEN STELLAR and HORSEGIRL, a trio sponsored by Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.
… and where it is coming from. The path of Primavera Sound today is clear precisely because in the past it was well marked. Safeguarding the essence of the festival will be ALAN SPARHAWK, who has not lost an ounce of curiosity in his post-Low life, the indie icon KIM DEAL with her solo debut, the crooner DESTROYER and THE JESUS LIZARD, who will present their first album in over a quarter of a century without having renounced to all that ferocity that has only increased their noise-punk legend. To have all of them at Primavera Sound Porto 2025 is to ensure that Steve Albini’s legacy is definitely in good hands.
A festival in two directions. From Barcelona to Porto… and vice versa. Once again, the Portuguese festival will embrace that idiosyncrasy born in Barcelona and already recognisable all over the world, but the exchange of influences will once again take place in both directions. A GAROTA NÃO, THE BLKBRDS, CAPITÃO FAUSTO, DAVID BRUNO, EU.CLIDES, KLIN KLOP, MARIA REIS, NUNCA MATES O MANDARIM and SURMA will act as official ambassadors of the Portuguese music scene, ANAVITÓRIA, LINIKER and TULIPA RUIZ will add the Brazilian touch, while CAROLINA DURANTE will ensure that the Parque da Cidade also sings in Spanish.
